When I celebrated July 4th with loved ones and friends, this year more than
ever, I reflected on the meaning of the concept of “independence.” The
Declaration of Independence states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that
among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

It seems to me that these words express ideals more than reality. All of
humankind seeks happiness and yet, life presents us with unforeseen
challenges, much like the challenge of ALS. My independence seems to be
shrinking daily, and yet, my heart is filled with your good wishes and
thoughtfulness. I thank you for taking this journey with me and I appreciate
your support and love.
