Using a Hoyer Lift
Using a Hoyer Lift
First let me say a few words about the Hoyer Lift. A Hoyer lift is a type of patient lift that helps caregivers transfer individuals who have limited mobility from one surface to another, such as from a bed to a wheelchair. It typically uses a sling to support the patient and can be operated manually or powered by electricity.
So, my wonderful team, supervised by Mark Smith, (Physical Therapist extraordinaire) owner/operator of Eldervibe, LLC and several of my marvelous and loving caregivers, put me into a Hoyer Lift sling and got me out of my bed.
My team then guided me into my special motorized wheelchair. I don’t have much strength in my hands at this point in my ALS journey, so I went around and around in circles in the kitchen using the thumb on one hand to manage the controls. And guess what, I didn’t even care if I went around in circles in the kitchen — it was just so much fun. The next time we do this; we’re going to get me out on the patio in the backyard to listen to the birds and enjoy a few minutes of sunshine.
What a blessing it is to have so many caring people helping me find a little joy! My heart is full of love and gratitude for each gesture of love from my team, my family, and my friends. Thanks to each and every one of you.
